Save the Special Date

Wedding News >

Wedding chapel owner Charlotte Richards has been in the wedding business for more than 55 years. What are the busiest wedding days she’s ever had?

July 7, 2007, and November 11, 2011. Otherwise known as 7-7-7 and 11-11-11.

Richards, owner of the seven chapels that make up The Little White Wedding Chapel located on the Las Vegas strip, has a special keepsake to remind her of the 7-7-7 date. It’s an 8-by-10-foot neon sign with a collage of 400 of the couples that got married in her chapel on July 7, 2007.

“Some of wearing blue jeans, some are wearing gowns, shorts, all sorts of things,” Richards says. “There are probably at least 100 more couples that got married that day.”

In fact, according to Clark County, Nevada, records, more than 4,000 marriage licenses were issued between July 4 and July 7 that year.

Wedding website The Knot typically has 12,000 weddings registered for any given Saturday in July. For July 2007, that number skyrocketed to 38,000.
Dates with repeating numbers are hard to come by, and this year will bring up the last repetitive date in our lifetime: 12/12/12. So what is it about repeating numbers? What’s so special?

For Ohio residents Billie Greene her fiancé Tim Leedy, it was the simple repetition of numbers that made the 12-12-12 date appealing. The couple will be getting married at 12 minutes after midnight – 12:12 a.m. – on 12-12-12 at Richards’ Las Vegas chapel.

“It just seems like we’ve done everything wrong,” says Greene, who’s studying at Urbana College in Urbana, Ohio. “This is the third marriage for both of us. We thought maybe getting married in Vegas on 12-12-12 would make things right.”

Because the couple is having a small wedding with just family and friends there weren’t any problems with getting everyone together for a trip to Vegas.

Dec. 12, 2012, is a bit different than previous repetitive dates, as 12-12-12 falls on a Wednesday, an ultra-nontraditional wedding date, where as July 7, 2007, was a Saturday, and Nov. 11, 2011, was Friday, the two most popular days for weddings.

Rose-Ann Henry, The Little White Wedding Chapel’s wedding consultant who has worked with Richards for more than 25 years, says as of the end of April, about 30 couples had registered to wed on 12-12-12.

The fact that the day does fall on a weekday could deter some from scheduling a wedding for that date, says Henry.

Boston resident Renee Bishop and her fiancé Montoya Evans are not letting the Wednesday bit get in their way of planning a destination wedding. The couple plans to invite people as if their New Hampshire wedding is on a weekend and hope that those who really want to be there will attend despite the midweek date.

“Unless you live another hundred years this date is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Bishop says. “I feel like our love is a once in a lifetime chance. That’s what this date symbolizes.”
