Wedding and bridesmaid dresses can be stressful. Bridesmaid dresses often have a one-and-done lifespan. Wedding-dress shopping can require designated shopping trips by appointment only. If only you could turn that horrific bridesmaid dress into a fashionable piece you could really wear again, or grab your dress during your Sunday grocery run.
Two new dress offerings hope to solve both those conundrums.
Newlymaid by The Dessy Group
This new service from The Dessy Group lets women take one of fashion’s most-maligned garments – the bridesmaid dress – and upgrade it for any closet’s go-to piece: the little black dress.
Newlymaid will accept bridesmaid and special occasion dresses from any designer brand and in return offer a 30- to 50-percent credit value toward a new “any occasion” dress; the six styles currently available sell between $150 and $250 at full price and consist of looks for work or a night out. Here’s how it works.
The former ’maid logs onto the Newlymaid website, newlymaid.com, and requests a free mailer to ship the old bridesmaid dress to Newlymaid. The old dress is inspected to make sure it has no pulls, tears or stains, and to be sure all zippers and closures are in working order. If the dress meets the criteria, the customer will receive a confirmation email noting that the dress has been accepted and that special pricing has been made available in her Newlymaid account.
The returned dresses are either donated to charity. Dresses suitable for reuse will be donated to Clothes4Souls, which bring shoes and apparel to people in need around the world. Newlymaid also works with UNIFI, a global textile company, to recycle qualifying dresses that are 100-percent polyester.
Kirstie Kelly Signature at Costco
Wedding dresses at big-box stores are nothing new. Designer Isaac Mizrahi hit a bull’s-eye in 2007 with under-$200 line of gowns for Target. Now, celeb designer Kirstie Kelly has unveiled a new Signature line exclusive to Costco, offering couture inspired gowns starting at 40 percent off retail price.
The Signature line feature six new styles with classic silhouettes, the collection is finished with soft embellishments, including Alencon lace, crystal and pearl beading, in addition to handmade flowers and petals.
Prices range from $699.99 to $1,399.99
