Bridal gown trends you need to see
Even without a runway, Bridal Fashion Week went on this season – at least virtually. The event, which is usually held twice a year in the spring and the fall, was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, many designers still found ways to display their collections for spring 2021 brides online via photoshoots from home and video appointments.
Here are some of the latest trends to inspire brides who are looking forward to tying the knot in the next year.
1. Chic Minimalism
The ‘90s are back in a big way for bridal fashion. Designers like Jenny Yoo and Savannah Miller are embracing the “less is more” aesthetic this season with sleek sheath silhouettes, square necklines and spaghetti straps.
2. Cowl Details
Another trend from the ‘90s that’s reemerging – cowls. This draped neckline adds just the right amount of oomph to an understated gown. For extra intrigue, though, consider a cowl on the back of your dress, like the “Gavin” from Nouvelle Amsale’s Spring/Summer 2021 collection with a lace panel.
3. Sheer Materials
“The most notable trends for 2021 wedding gowns are lightweight and transparent – a very sexy combination,” says Liz Martinez, designer and founder of Liz Martinez Bridal Wear.
The designer’s spring 2021 collection features a variety of tulle-based gowns with corset bodices and delicate appliques for a romantic, yet modern effect.
4. One Shoulder
This asymmetrical neckline could be found on dresses from a number of collections this season, including Galvan, Sophie et Voilà, Berta, and Sareh Nouri. Its versatility and elegance make it the perfect choice for brides who want something to bare a little skin without committing to a strapless gown.
5. Unexpected Bows
Bows aren’t new to the world of bridal gowns, but this season many designers put a modern spin on the classic detail. Viktor & Rolf, for instance, upgraded a fit and flair dress with a spine of bows in various sizes and shapes. Oversized bows can also be found on the bodices of multiple gowns, like the “Elvira” and “Emilia,” from Sophie Et Voilà Spring 2021.
6. Floral Features
“Floral elements are very noticeable” in new designs this season, says Martinez. The designer’s own collection heavily features dresses with floral appliques, especially around the bodices. Other designers feeling floral fever for spring 2021 include Reem Acra, whose new collection includes gowns with floral embroidery and lace.
7. Modern Minis
Whether they’re worn for the rehearsal dinner, reception or even the ceremony, the mini dress is a fun and flirty alternative to the full-length wedding gown. Viktor & Rolf’s modern take on the bridal mini includes a funky laser-cut flower dress with a collar as well as a beaded number with a deep-v and tulle skirt.
8. Sparkle and Shine
Brides who want to shine on their wedding day will love this trend. Shiny and sparkly embellishments are everywhere this season – from a sequin striped dress by Galvan to beaded sheer side panels on a gown from Reem Acra to a gown with pearl-dotted sleeves from Liz Martinez.
