Under the Wedding Weather

Planning >

While tissues to blot away your happy tears are definitely acceptable, no one – including yourself – wants to deal with tissues for blowing your nose. A cold or flu is terrible enough as it is without the bad timing, but there are some things you can do. Follow these tips to feel better by time you say “I do.”

1. Get as much sleep as possible

Kristen Johnson Brogan, a professional speaker, registered dietitian, and chief nutrition officer of On Target Living (a health and performance company focused on teaching people how to be their best self), says that the beautiful thing about our bodies is its amazing ability to heal itself given the right ingredients. And the first, most important ingredient? Sleep. In the days up to the wedding, especially if you’re under the weather, give yourself at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night to help recharge your body, Brogan says.

2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Another way to get over an illness fast is to drink enough water to flush out your system. Rehydrate and aim to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water per day – and go for water sources like artesian, spring, ionized, alkaline or coconut waters for the best results, according to Brogan.

3. Scarf down the greens

Nutrition is, of course, key to healing a cold, as well. You always hear about dark, leafy greens being the best for nutrition, and according to Brogan, it’s definitely the best way to stock up on vitamins before the big day.

“Chlorophyll is one of the most important nutrients the body needs from a nutrition standpoint,” Brogan says. “It's energizing, cleansing, and detoxifying.”

The best sources for chlorophyll include wheatgrass and spirulina and chlorella (a fresh water algae). So when it comes to the morning of, why not start the day with wheatgrass shots?

And if you’re recovering from any type of injury, be sure to stock up on omega 3s to speed up the recovery process. Add a high quality fish oil, flaxseeds or chia seeds, to help lubricate and heal any ailing joints.

4. Prepare for the day of

If all else fails, and you don’t feel 100 percent on the day of the wedding, be sure to prepare some emergency supplies. Have your wedding party pack up under the weather essentials like Kleenex and cough drops along with the oil blotting sheets and eyelash curlers. Brogan also suggests packing up a few vials of essential oils, which can be applied easily and provide calming effects that are especially great for treating common ailments like poor sleep, colds and flu and pain.
