According to Kimberly Gant, a fashion consultant with San Francisco-based Ensemble Personal Image Consulting, most of the playful trends in men’s fashion have been appearing in casual weddings. “Overall there has been an increase in the grey suit and the navy coat with chinos for grooms and groomsmen,” she says. An easy way to add photo-friendly (but hide-able!) flair to these laid-back looks is with socks that showcase bold color — purple is hot for fall, or you can match your wedding palette — and/or a print, such as sports-themed, stripes, polka dots, checker, paisley, birds, skulls or Paul Smith’s mismatched “Odd Socks.”

For more obvious impact, consider fashion-forward kicks like tasseled loafers, saddle shoes, John Varvatos boots or SperryTop-Siders, or embellish classic oxfords with brightly hued laces (neon is very in, or go with “something blue”), Gant says. Jessica Rae Anderson, a fashion and bridal stylist based in Miami and New York, also loves the sophisticated but edgy metallic trim on men’s oxfords, as seen on the recent Chanel runway.

Instantly update any suit – or tuxedo! – with a pink, powder blue, gray or khaki shirt. Plaid or delicate floral prints also are on the uptick; but if you opt for a solid hue, Anderson suggests sporting a patterned pocket square (“Mad Men” has made these dapper chest accessories popular again) paired with a coordinating skinny necktie or bow tie. “A less-conventional way for a modern groom to update a day or beach wedding look is to sport an Ascot in a pop-y solid color that coordinates with the wedding palette,” she adds.

Alternatively, accent a more subdued necktie with a flashy tie clip/bar, suggests Gant. She likes Ted Baker, or check out Etsy, where shops like Frawn makes wooden versions with laser-etched animals. Ornate cuff links also are a simple way to include a touch of personal pizzazz, adds Anderson.  Think everything from precious gems and monograms to vintage buttons, carved wood and more.

Yet another trending option is to forgo the traditional floral boutonnière in favor of a unique pin on the lapel, says Anderson, who has seen various styles with feathers, buttons, ribbon and cording. But feel free to employ other meaningful, thematic or fun objects, such as old keys, stones, paper, Scrabble pieces or even Lego.
