Trend Watch: Separates
One of the most striking bridal images I’ve seen recently was the opening spread in the gown editorial in the December/January issue of Brides magazine. The model, who’s red hair basically is the only pop of color on the page, is lying back in a chair, wearing a cream-colored chunky cashmere sweater from the Row, the Olsen twins’ fashion line, over a beaded tulle Rosa Clara sheath gown.
A winter cover-up is nothing new, nor uncommon. But where jackets or boleros or wraps provide some warmth while still keeping the dress the main attraction, the deliberateness of the sweater — the bodice, the focal point of the gown, completely covered up — is what really struck me.
Later, when I was looking through photos of Spring bridal collections coming out of bridal fashion week, I was taken by an image from Watters Brides. The model is wearing a classic, crisp white button-down shirt tucked into a rose gold shirred multi-tiered, fit-and-flare skirt, finished with a beaded belt.
“This season, we are putting more emphasis on our bridal separates,” David Lopez, a Watters spokesman, told me in an email. “We wanted to showcase the skirt and how versatile it can be. That’s why we paired it with a classic button-down shirt.”
That versatility allows a bride to do something different on her wedding day without deviating from the classic gown silhouette. It’s a unique look that lets her be herself and be a bride while being anything but predictable. What’s not to love?
